Stunning wildflower displays in Mickleton gardens

Whilst not 'Rewilding' in the strictest sense, these photos clearly demonstrate that native wildflowers can not only create stunning displays and add colour to our gardens, they also provide food for insects and make a valuable contribution towards restoring biodiversity. Glorious Cotswold Grasslands is an exciting and ambitious project which aims to create the largest network of wildflower rich Jurassic limestone grassland in the country – around 100 hectares in total, over three years.  In the 1930s, 40% of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) was covered in wildflower-rich grassland; today less than 1.5% remains.  This habitat was once abundant with beautiful wildflowers, and supported a vast diversity of wildlife, including butterflies, bees, bats, birds, and many other animals. Bringing wildflowers back to Mickleton

Please support our Rewilding Mickleton Programme The adoption of a few basic principles can significantly improve the biodiversity of our verges. There are nearly 500,000 kilometres of rural road verge in the UK. This is equal to half of our remaining flower-rich grasslands and meadows: their potential is enormous. Over 700 species of wild flower grow on the UK’s road verges – nearly 45% of our total flora. And where wild flowers lead, wildlife follows -a multitude of bees, butterflies, birds and bugs - all enjoyed by 23 million road commuters. Priorities for safety and access, along with budget constraints and difficulties with the collection of litter and grass clippings can mean that enhancing their wildlife value is often low on the list. Reseeding the 3Bs

Despite the bitter wind half a dozen enthusiastic rewilders turned out to give the 3Bs Community Wildlife Garden behind the Methodist Church some maintenance. Much of the rough grass on the banks was strimmed off (and removed) and the entire 'annuals' wildflower patch was dug over and re-seeded with what should be a brightly coloured display of poppies, cornflowers, corncockle and corn marigolds.  Meanwhile packs of wildflower seeds for families to plant in small plots in their own gardens were left out for collection outside the Methodist Church, in Oak Grange and outside Jill and Andy's at the end of the high Street. By lunchtime, the majority of the packs had been taken so we look forward to seeing some photos of  'private' displays in due course. A further strip of land has now been offered for planting close to the school.
